This kit, for the money, is definitely not bad. However, anyone looking to buy this needs to understand that this is not a professional quality lens. It should go without saying, but I see people complain about this setup all the time. In all honesty, what do you expect out of a $100 telephoto lens?
Here’s the run-down of the kit and what is included.
1. Phoenix 500mm Telephoto Lens
This lens is fully manual, so regardless of what camera it is used on, you’ll have to be adjusting your focus by hand. The focus ring is smooth and the optics are decent enough that you should have no problem dialing in to what you’re looking at. At f/8, you need to be in good lighting or be prepared to use some long exposure times. Because of this, if you do not have a tripod, invest in one as soon as possible.
2. Generic 2x Teleconverter
It defenitely magnifies the shot, but it’s not a fantastic teleconverter. It will pretty noticeable reduce the light in your shot, but if you are shooting on a tripod (and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t with this setup), it can be worked around.
3. Stedi-Stock shoulder brace
This is actually a pretty handy device, for what it is. However, if you are shooting with the 500mm and the teleconverter attached, this likely will not make it nearly stable enough to get clean shots. However, this will work great with a 70-300mm lens if you aren’t shooting in perfect lighting. Just be careful when using this in public places. It really does make your rig look a bit like a weapon to people that are only marginally paying attention to their surroundings.
4. Generic T-Mount Adapter, Cleaning Kit, Rear Lens Cap
Not much to say about these. The T-mount adapter I received is actually a very nice piece. The threads are tight and smooth, and is a good addition to anyone’s setup. The cleaning kit is very run-of-the-mill. It’s worth it to buy better gear to clean your equipment, but I’ll keep this in my extra bag just in case.
Overall, this is a decent kit AS LONG as you know what you are buying.
